It is time to sleep, to surrender the cares of the mind so that I can rest and restore, but the mind wants to think and thinking keeps me from sleeping. I have learned to practice being in my body as a way of being present and telling myself not to think because at this point nothing comes of it but repetition of whatever today’s unresolved problem might be. To be in my body, I begin at my feet. I acknowledge my feet and move up through my ankles, calves, knees, thighs, buttocks, torso, chest, shoulders, neck, and head. Lastly, I become aware of my upper and forearms, and lastly the hands. I feel the energy or aliveness in my hands, and I say to myself, “Don’t think.”

Sometimes before I can complete the exercise, my mind has taken off to ruminate. I can usually remember where I left off, maybe the waist, and I come back to the torso, etc. I bring awareness to the body because thinking is usually about past or future and puts me in my head, as if I am a head-only creature.

When I do this exercise, I fall asleep surprisingly quickly. If I am particularly worried, I might do several rounds of tapping first. Tapping is touching certain meridian or acupressure points in the body with two fingers in a certain order and saying something like, “I fall asleep quickly. I sleep deep and at peace.” Tapping quiets the medulla oblongata, the fight or flight organ at the back of the neck and base of the spine.”

It might seem odd to advise against thinking when the Sun is in Gemini, whose keywords are “I think.” Calm thinking and planning are fine throughout the course of the day or when having to make a decision, but the trouble with most humans is that thinking is past or future and living is present. Living is now.

This New Moon in Gemini is a time for new thoughts and ideas and new directions. This is a good time for study or research, and a good time for conversation and sharing. It is a good time to apply for something or to write a letter of importance. It’s a good time to refresh yourself and to think in a new way. It’s a good time to change your mind or simply drop old opinions and thoughts.

Someone said that human beings are the only creatures who punish themselves and each other over and over for the same crime. I often think about the young woman who was allegedly raped by the boxer Mike Tyson. He was sentenced to several years of jail time and she declared that he would serve his time and it would be over, but that she would never, ever get over what he did to her. “No, honey,” I said to the television, “don’t let him take your whole life!” This would be a self-imposed life sentence for her, a self-imposed life of suffering and rehashing the pain of that event. This self-imposed suffering would not hurt Mike Tyson.

The other opportunity that we have at this time is to think differently about who we are as physical and spiritual beings. We might say of ourselves, I am a spiritual being living in a material world. I will care for my spirit and my form as they operate together.

Practicum

Try the practice I outlined above if you need to quiet your mind to sleep that you may awaken refreshed and restored. Check out tapping videos on YouTube and www.thetappingsolution.com to learn more about tapping.
