The Email subject read, “All men are created equal. A dream denied?” This reminded me of Langston Hughes question, “What happens to a dream deferred?”

Dreams may be deferred, but they are not denied. Frequently, we mistakenly believe that we are denied by something external to ourselves.

If you do not defer your dream, no one can deny it.

If you think that it is someone else’s fault that you don’t live your dream, then your dream might be is denied. However, external denial requires internal acquiescence.

I recently read about two women who encountered a glass ceiling in the fields they loved. They got so far, but were not allowed to go further. They were not allowed to demonstrate equality and possible superiority. I have my own theory about why men, put limits on women. The reason has nothing to do with men’s belief in women’s inferiority, but rather fear that the women might surpass them. The male-exclusive hierarchy could not risk giving women the opportunity to demonstrate that they are created equal. In this story, neither woman tried to break through the ceiling. They women just did something else with their brilliance and thereby accessed the open sky.

Why do we ask institutions and other outside agencies to make the call on what is valuable and what is not? Why do we yield to outer authority? Why do we ask the oppressors to be nice or the thieves to return what they have stolen? Why do we seek recognition from those who have made it their business to deny us?

In such cases, we do not realize that our value, merit or worthiness comes from Source. We give others the power by our belief that these others have power we do not have. Women are the examples here, but this counsel concerns anyone who thinks of themselves as disempowered. Part of our problem might be that we want the system to be fixed by rules or laws and do not want to take responsibility for our personal thinking.

Hear ye, hear ye: No one outside you can deny your dream. Only you can deny them. If I don’t live my dream, and I think it is somebody’s fault because they have the power to grant it and they don’t, I will always be denied.

Instead of struggling, fighting, and petitioning our oppressors, we could be creating. We could be choosing what you want to see in the world and creating it instead of fighting off the people or systems to which we have handed over our power.

The Sun and Moon are in Gemini. Mercury, ruler of Gemini, is in the water sign Cancer conjunct Jupiter in Cancer. The counsel is to go over and under and around that which appears to obstruct you. Align with the Source, and no one can stop you.

I think of the Cuban poet Valladares who declared that even though he was in prison, his mind and his soul were free. He drew a sharp line between the body and the inner life, which remains sovereign unless one surrenders it.  If we gain and maintain our inner sovereignty, Our bodies will remain free and our lives will be fulfilling.

Practicum

  • Sit quietly and name one dream you have treated as dependent on outside approval. Write down the belief that keeps it deferred.

  • List three actions you can take without permission. Affirm: “My worth and my way comes from Source, and I move with inner authority.”

  • Begin one step today.
