Fire needs air to survive. Air needs fire for warmth. The fire and air of Aries and Libra are the relationship polarity. Fire and Air always oppose, but they also cooperate. A person cannot exist without the contrast of others. I remember watching a show about a man who lived in a cave because he wanted to be absolutely alone, but even his desire to be alone was shaped by his perception of others. Occasionally, he sold crystals that he mined in exchange for money to buy some of the staples he needed. Even if only minimally, he had to have some contact with others. Moon in Aries reflects the narration of the imagination as represented by the planets in Libra. The Sun, representing heart and source, combined with Mars representing action and force and Mercury, thinking and communicating, all in Libra. Moon in Aries can be emotionally reactive and easily offended. Moon in Aries can also be impulsive and stirred into action based on memory and association. We can be especially fired up about believing that we are not getting our full due, or that we are not understood.
O Master, let me not seek as much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love, for it is in giving that one receives, it is in self-forgetting that one finds, it is in pardoning that one is pardoned.
The above is a portion of the peace prayer and peace is associated with Libra. The tone of the full Moon chart is Libra, with mostly cardinal and air signs. We could all stand to ask to be instruments of peace, since primal air is the climate of this period. It’s all about relationships, and as the prayer says, it is in giving that one receives and in pardoning that one is pardoned. It is in the interest of the self to be mindful of others. We can also stand to be conscious of the thoughts we put on the airwaves. It is said that thoughts are things and thoughts can hurt or heal at a distance.
Patanjali, the sage who authored the Yoga Sutras, said “when you are steadfast in your abstention of thoughts of harm directed toward yourself and others, all living creatures will cease to feel fear in your presence.”
The axis of relationship is Aries representing self and Libra representing the visioned other. They are both masculine, yang or projecting signs. Aries projects with the fire of impulse or ignition, and at its other extreme, Libra, air; opinion or judgment is projected. Since both signs are outwardly directed, interaction or cooperation must be voluntary on both sides. In terms of degree or relationship on this polarity, Libra, being Venus-ruled, is going to be more accommodating and cognizant of others than Aries.
Practicum
I was born with the Moon in Aries. I notice that when I read social media, certain judgments from others gives me a rush of adrenaline that triggers the fight response. It should be noted that the adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and that the kidneys are ruled by Libra. If I have any presence of mind, I refrain from responding immediately because the response is reactive and defensive and might be counterproductive. I also know that when I am firm in my beliefs, I have no need for others to believe as I do. For example, when I encounter a critic of astrology, I can answer as Newton did. “Sir. I have studied the subject. You have not.”
Take note if your temper suddenly rises or your heart races as if you are in danger. You can afford to pause. Don’t dash off or blurt out your angry response. If someone is attacking and you attack in turn, you will not be able to strike a balance. Pause. Give yourself a moment to calm yourself and think your response through. That way you won’t be exasperating or escalating a situation. With Mars in Libra, you can activate the peacemaker, or alert yourself to equilibrate.
