Full Moon
October 5, 2017
12 Aries 43’

MissAccording to Deepak Chopra, there has never been a time in human history where there was no conflict. If peace is just a platitude, a prattling of words that have no substance, I allow myself to be drawn into conflict after conflict. Can’t I choose peace?  Libra, represented by the scales, is the sign of peace. As an air sign, its plane of operation is mental. Libra is the sign of one-to-one relationships. Libra regulates close friendships, partnerships, alliances, collaboration, and marriage. Ruled by Venus, the sign of love and creativity, Libra’s function is balance and harmony. Venus’ domain is the 7th house, also referred to as the “house of open enemies.” In Libra, you know who you are sparring with.

This full Moon is in Aries, a fire sign  It squares Pluto in Capricorn while it opposes the Sun in Libra. Fire is volatile and the Moon in Aries can be quick- to-anger in its responses. Pluto is power, the kind of power that we usually think belongs to others, especially those who are mean and ruthless and will destroy or threaten.

How can we have peace? And if there has never been a time without conflict, what can the Sun in Libra reveal to us about peace?

During the 60’s I was a teenager involved in the civil rights movement. I was angry and emotionally wounded by the injustices depicted on the television screen water hoses, dogs, bombings and condemnatory speech. My Sun in Pisces conjoins Mars in Pisces Mars is the planet of war. I was a follower of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King and actively marched, demonstrated and attended rallies with my mother. King called out the war in Viet Nam, so I was also anti-war in sentiment. I was a member of the NAACP Teen Council and assisted with voter registration. I remember the NAACP office in New York featuring a large poignant picture of Myrlie Evers taken at her husband’s funeral with one tear running down her face. Medgar Evers was assassinated for his work in civil rights, and I remember handing out voter registration flyers with this picture.

Today, I am still keenly sensitive to the appearance of injustice and raw rudeness. The 45th offends and angers me, but I am seeking to be conscious.  I recognize that peace, balance and harmonious thinking are crucial to my own health.

Venus, the planet of love, rules Libra. Neptune is higher love. Love is the key, no matter how much we poo-poo it. Venus is also creativity. While love is a leap when one is angry, hurting or fearful, perhaps creativity can be a nudge in Venus’ direction. Creativity calls for original, inventive and innovative responses and solutions.

Peace on earth evolves to the extent that humans will it. Will is determination, resolve, willpower,  and motivation. It is self-control, self-discipline, and strength of mind. Venus and Mars are conjunct in Virgo at this full moon—peace and war in the sign of criticism and health.  Louise Hay said that self-criticism is the root of lack of self-love. Criticism is censure, disapproval, reproach, blame, and condemnation. Criticism diminishes the self (Aries) and it diminishes others (Libra).

The opposite of criticism is praise. Make praise your spiritual practice during this full Moon period. Whether silently to yourself or out loud to others, give praise (especially when you notice yourself feeling at odds).

“Whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” If I can’t praise and respect it, I will not think upon it. — Philippians 4:8.
